New Board selected to serve for 2014

13 Board Members have been selected to serve as chamber leaders for 2014.  Of these 13, four will be elected to serve in officer positions of President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer.  Elections will take place at the December 11th board meeting and announced at the January 23rd luncheon.

Below is a brief bio of the 13 directors.  Members are encouraged to contact these leaders with any ideas, questions or concerns regarding the goals and mission of the 2014 board.  The board anticipates an exciting year of continued growth and prosperity for the business community in Mint Hill.

PHIL ANGELO – Phil is the owner of Leisure Travel Experts, here in Mint Hill. Phil has operated this unique Travel Agency, with his wife Barbara, since 1992. A graduate of Dutchess College in New York, Phil retired from Hartford Insurance Company after 25 years. He is also retired from active service with Mint Hill Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Department. Phil served as Paramedic and Assistant Fire Chief for 31 years, and now serves the Department on the Board of Directors. Phil's Son Lives in Hembry Bridge with his wife and two children, and his daughter lives in Mint Hill with her husband and 4 children. High School football contests are lively conversations in the Angelo/Canter family.

BONNIE BROADWELL - Bonnie Broadwell, RN, BSN is the Manager of Nursing Operations and Guest Services at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center.  Bonnie has been with Presbyterian / Novant since 1984 and at MMC since 1996.  She has been married to her husband Robert for 26 years and has two children, Robbie 23 and Sabrina 20.  Bonnie is a 1981 graduate of Independence High School and graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1986.  She received her BSN in 2011 from WSSU.  She is currently serving her second year on the Chamber Board with Mint Hill.

BOYD DAVIS – Boyd Davis is the Assistant Vice President at First Citizens Bank in Mint Hill.  His focus is working with Community Businesses in the Mint Hill market.  Previous history includes 6 years with RBC Bank in Matthews and 7 years with Discover Card Merchant and Electronic Processing.  Boyd graduated from Auburn University in Business Management and minor in Marketing in 1994.   Married to  Julie who works for the RED Cross in Charlotte.  Spends most of his time with family activities including his children's soccer games and dance competitions.  In his spare time, Boyd is a drummer in the band, Sometime Monday.

MIKE COCHRANE – Mike was born and raised in Mint Hill and graduated from Independence High School in 1970. He attended UNCC and was a 1985 Graduate of the North Carolina School of Banking at Chapel Hill.  He has been in Banking for 33 years and currently works for Yadkin Bank.  Mike has served on the Mint Hill Business Association Board for eight years and have been on the Mint Hill Chamber Board except for one year since its inception.  He has also served 6 years on the Board for The Levine Senior Citizens Center in Matthews and is the longest standing member of the Mint Hill Lion's Club with over 32 years of service.  Mike was a past Rotarian of approx. 20 years, and serves as a Deacon at First Baptist Church Indian Trail.

BARBARA COSTA - Barbara & her husband, Joe, relocated to Charlotte, NC from Spring Hill, FL in Sept 2011.  Barbara is licensed personal and commercial insurance agent & Life, Heath & Variable annuity agent for the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, & Florida.  She started her insurance career in 1999 and currently works for H.B. Cantrell & Co.  Prior to Barbara's years in the Insurance industry she spent 9 years in the Medical field as a National Registered Medical Assistant and assisted Doctors and Surgeons in several fields of practice.

DENISE HALLETT – Denise manages external affairs for Vulcan Materials' Southern NC Region which encompasses the Charlotte region as well as the Rockingham market. In addition, she manages sales from their Gold Hill Quarry which is in eastern Cabarrus County. She is proud to be a founding member of the Vulcan Women's Network which was formed to promote, retain, and attract female leaders in the company.

Denise joined Vulcan in 1993 and worked in a sales capacity that transformed into her current role with community affairs.  Through Vulcan's community affairs program initiatives, she engages with local chambers such as the Mint Hill Chamber where she currently serves on their Board of Directors and helped to create new membership value programs (New Member Orientation, Ambassador Program, and Golf Classic).  Denise also serves with the Charlotte Chamber as a Board of Directors & Advisor Member, and is past Chair of the Chamber's Manufacturer's Council and participates on several committees within the chamber including the chamber's Total Resource Campaign.  She also serves on the Cabarrus Chamber's Board of Directors.   In addition, Denise manages Vulcan's Adopt-A-School programs at several schools and supports educational initiatives related to earth & environmental science.  She has been named Chair of the 2012 Rowan County United Way Campaign where she currently serves on their Board of Directors.  Denise has also enjoyed chairing several successful fundraisers for schools and organizations in the region.

Denise is blessed to be married to Michael for 23 years and has 2 wonderful children (Andy, 21 and Sarah, 15).  Denise & Michael live in Salisbury, NC, her hometown.  She graduated from NC State University with a BS in Civil Engineering and was previously employed by the Institute for Transportation Research and Education, and Koch Materials Company.

NATE HUGGINS – Nate is the CEO of Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care and has been a community resident for 25 years and business proprietor for 15 years.  He is the founder of the Mecklenburg County Adult Day Care Association, member of American Legion Post #235, member of the Presbyterian Hospital Healthcare Alliance Board and supporter of the Mecklenburg County Men's Shelter.   Nate is committed to making his community a better place for all people.

JOHN HURST - John and his family relocated to North Carolina in the mid-1980s and have lived in the Mint Hill area ever since. He and Ruth have two grown sons and are active in their church.  Over a 37 year career in banking, he held a wide variety of staff and management positions at a bank in Nashville Tennessee and at Bank of America. While working full time, John earned a law degree and three North Carolina insurance licenses.

BOB LUCAS – Bob is the current Vice President of the Board and has served the chamber since 2012.  He has worked on Madness, Discover Mint Hill & Golf Committees for 2012 & 2013.  Bob is an agent for AllState Insurance and is agency is located in Mint Hill.

TONY LONG – Tony has been a resident of Mint Hill for 49 years, and is currently employed by Mint Hill Tool Rental & Storage.  He is the current Chairman of the Mint Hill Planning Board, current board member at Lion's Services, Current Chairman of board NC Operation Lifesaver Raleigh NC and current Region 3 Director serving NC, SC, TN, GA, AL,& FL for American Rental Association in Moline, Illinois.  Tony has served as past President of the  Mint Business Association, Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce, Past President of ARA of NC, and Past President of Mint Hill Lion's Club.  He volunteers at Shiloh Driving School Mint Hill NC and with the Guardian ad Litem in Cabarrus County NC.

RODNEY ROTHOFF – Rodney has served on the Mint Hill Chamber Board for the last 2 years, where he co-launched the Ambassador program, and was an active committee member for the inaugural Mint Hill Chamber Golf tournament.  Rodney also serves on the board of the YMCA, and is active in the community throughout Charlotte.  He believes that Mint Hill Business is on the rise, and that being on the board is an honor.

COLLEEN RHYANT – Colleen joined Carolinas Healthcare System in 2007, serving as the Practice Manager at Carolinas Healthcare Urgent Care – Mint Hill location.  In the years prior to joining CHS Colleen worked as a Secretarial Supervisor for Carolinas NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates in Charlotte, NC and as a Corporate Communications Specialist for US Airways, Inc. in Arlington, VA.

Colleen has a Masters of Health Administration degree from Pfeiffer University of Graduate Studies in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland. She is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, The National Scholars Honor Society and Carolinas HealthCare System – Urgent Care Advisory Board.  Colleen has a genuine passion for helping people, serving the community and improving the lives of others.  She is married to Rev. Thomas Rhyant Jr. and has two daughters, Joneen and Brittany.  She is currently serving her first year on the Chamber Board with Mint Hill.

SUE WOLF – Sue has been a small business owner since 1982 when she opened her first flower shop in upstate New York.  She relocated to Florida and then to Charlotte in 1998 where bought Abbey Rose Florist in the East Charlotte area.  After purchasing a home in Mint Hill in 2000, she decided to move her business to a community that she had come to love.   From the beginning, Abbey Rose has given back to the community that has given us so much. Our shop motto "Shop Mint Hill" reinforces my passion to support small businesses in our local community.
